Why should I build an EcoHouse?
Amid continuously increasing consumption and living costs around the world, an energy-efficient, decentralized and individualistic approach to home design becomes paramount, since proper planning and construction of building can result in major energy savings but also increased quality of living.
The advantage of eco-housing is, that it relies on traditional systems based on materials that can be obtained around the world locally. The houses can be easily built by local contractors, as well as by relatively unskilled owner-builders.
From the economic point of view, building an EcoHouse is justified if it pays back to the owner the added equipment installation cost by fuel or electricity cost savings within a reasonable period.
From a more general, environmental standpoint, eco-housing is justified as it reduces our dependence on non-renewable fuels.
A well designed EcoHouse should conform to local climate, local fuel costs and other economic, lifestyle and living factors - something which has been largely missing in architectural and engineering design over the last few decades.
Final cost of building an ecohouse would vary according to local construction rates, equipment used and the amount and type of financing available from you as the home builder.
For instance, a self-help builder who can contribute their own labor for a sustainable installation saves not only on manpower, but contractor’s overhead percentage and the resulting finance charges, as well.
However, the decision of whether or not you should build an EcoHouse is and will always be - yours (and yours alone)!
