10 Foam Dome Home

This domed eco-house was intended for a quick-to-construct and affordable shelter for victims of natural disasters, but it can also be used as an affordable environment-friendly home.

Dome dwellings are efficient, and delightful to live in. Though they appear small from outside, they are spacious inside and the acoustics of the rounded structures have to be heard to be believed.

The dome of this eco-house is 6 metres (19 ft 8 in) in diameter. It is made of polyurethane foam, which provides the greatest protection against earthquakes and strong winds (hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes, sandstorms, etc.). Its floor area is 28 square metres (300 sq. ft), matching the standard area of a studio apartment.

Owing to its low shipping volume, easy foaming, low construction cost and skill level requirements, as well as ease of relocation, Foam Dome Home can provide affordable, weatherproof disaster-relief and housing on a mass-scale.

The outstanding thermal and acoustical insulation properties of spray-applied polyurethane foam allows for both both simplicity and speed of execution (foaming the air-form can be performed in only 1.5 hours by three workmen on site) and ultimately lead to 50% energy savings in comparison with a conventional housing unit.
